TRAVEL IN A POST PANDEMIC WORLD

TRAVEL & TOURISM IS AN INDUSTRY WHICH HAS BEEN DISRUPTED THE MOST BY THE COVID PANDEMIC. BUT WHAT WILL ITS FUTURE BE LIKE?

Our world seems to be at a standstill due to some recent developments. Perhaps consequently, the travel industry has lost billions of dollars.

SOME OBSERVATIONS...
  • Hotels, airlines, travel agencies, restaurants and even apps like Airbnb & Uber (which was already suffering losses prior to 2020) have suffered losses and face the insurmountable threat of a shutdown or bankruptcy.

  • There are certain economies which are heavily dependant on travel as a vital component of its GDP. For instance, Travel accounts for 15.5% & 14.3% of the GDP of Mexico and Spain respectively. The map below highlights other such nations.

  • Startups like WeWork, Lyft, Uber, Trivago, MakeMyTrip & Turo have virtually turned redundant due to loss of public contact. These enterprises will have to adapt quickly in order to survive.

THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL

Here are some ways in which travel can resume soon:

  • Governments can issue immunity passports to citizens having no history of infection & high immunity. Such passport holders can travel anywhere with proper precautions.

A REPLICA OF IMMUNITY PASSPORT

  • The emergence of travel bubble can simplify matters. Travel Bubbles means resumption of travel between two countries who have defeated the corona virus completely. This is primarily a bilateral initiative between 2 nations. Some functioning travel bubbles are Australia-New Zealand & Austria-Germany.

  • Aeroplanes can also have a sort of seating partition which can reduce contact between passengers.

  • Another obvious step is strict testing at various airports which can lead to early detection & can stop the spread of the virus.

  • Another impact will be on public transport (intra-city) where the maximum seating will reduce dramatically in buses, trains and metros. This can also reduce revenue for the government in such dire circumstances.

THATS ALL FOR THE DAY. THANKS FOR READING.

STAY SAFE.
