WHEN INDIA PLAYED KINGMAKER

Updated: Jun 22, 2020

THERE HAVE BEEN INSTANCES IN THE PAST WHEN INDIA HAS FLEXED ITS GEOPOLITICAL MUSCLES TO CHANGE POLITICAL LEADERS OF SEVERAL NATIONS HERE"S HOW.

India has not been the global leader that it has the potential to be. That said the Asian country has initiated political changes in its own sphere of influence i.e South Asia. It has done so covertly as well as by brute force.

SOME INSTANCES OF REGIME CHANGE BY INDIA ARE:

1. MALDIVES.

IN 2018, Abdulla Yameen (P resident) had taken an increasingly Pro-China stance abandoning India. Traditionally Maldives has been a staunch supporter and partner of India. Therefore the recent events forced New Delhi's hand to covertly influence the Maldivian polls. Yameen declared a state of emergency on knowing the results. However succumbing to global pressure due to Indian lobbying, he relinquished his position. Now, Indo-Maldivian ties are better than ever with PM Modi (India) advancing a USD 1.3 billion aid to the the new P resident and ally Mohhamed.Soleh.

2. Sri Lanka.

A civil war had erupted in Sri Lanka between the dominant Sinhalese and minority Tamilians in 1983. Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi sided with the Sinhalese and sent Indian military to the island nation. However it turned out to be a global humiliation as the Indian army being unaccustomed to guerrilla warfare was defeated easily. The PM had to pay a personal price as he was assassinated by Tamil suicide bombers in 1991.

3. Nepal,

The Himalayan kingdom has been India'a ally since its independence. However China has been steadily enhancing its influence recently. In response to this, New Delhi has found partners in the Madhesi group, who demands a separate province bordering India. Nepal Congress Party and Maoist rebels are also under Indian aegis. This coup although successful has created feelings of resentment amongst the Nepal populace.

4. East Pakistan.

This refers to Bangladesh's war of independence 0f 1971. India along with the Mukti Bahini (Rebel group) defeated the West Pakistan's army and earned the freedom of modern day Bangladesh. Indian PM Indira Gandhi took a bold yet rash decision by engaging directly.

CONCLUSION; I believe all these regime changes have various effects on India:

  • The Maldivian interruption has bolstered trade and ties.

  • The Sri Lankan debacle has hurt the image of Indian army with respect to foreign missions and also caused upheaval in the state of Tamil Nadu.

  • The Nepali incident has cause resentment & backfired as Chinese influence is at its peak.

  • The Bangladesh was has soured relations with Pakistan for the foreseeable future.
